Athlone Green City is a zero-carbon urban regeneration vision for the Athlone CBD, aimed at revitalising a historically significant but underinvested urban node. The project responds to decades of spatial fragmentation and economic decline by introducing a cohesive, mixed-use development framework that integrates residential, commercial, educational, and civic functions within a reactivated urban core.

The development is conceived as a catalyst for broader neighbourhood renewal, transforming underutilised sites and existing infrastructure into a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented environment. It repositions Athlone as a connected urban hub, leveraging its proximity to key transport networks and institutional anchors while enhancing public space, accessibility, and economic activity.

At its core, Athlone Green City is driven by a climate-responsive design approach that extends beyond infrastructure to influence behaviour and long-term sustainability. The project integrates renewable energy systems, including precinct-scale solar generation, alongside strategies that promote reduced car dependency, increased walkability, and inclusive housing typologies tailored to students and young families.

Developed as part of the Cape Town C40 Reinventing Cities initiative, the project positions itself as a replicable model for resilient, low-carbon urban development. Athlone Green City reflects a forward-looking approach to city-making — one that balances environmental performance, social inclusion, and economic viability to drive meaningful, long-term urban transformation.
