Tygerdal Green City is a transformative mixed-use development proposed for the Tygerdal Depot site in Cape Town, forming part of the C40 Reinventing Cities initiative. The project reimagines underutilised urban land as a high-performance, climate-responsive precinct that integrates residential, commercial, and social infrastructure within a cohesive and future-focused urban framework.

The development is anchored around a central landscaped park system, envisioned as a biodiverse public realm that supports community interaction, recreation, and ecological resilience. As illustrated in the project visuals, this green spine connects various precinct components while creating safe, pedestrian-friendly environments that prioritise social cohesion and well-being. The design promotes an active public realm with walkable streets, cycling routes, and integrated open spaces.

Tygerdal Green City is conceived as a “15-minute city,” where residents can access work, education, healthcare, retail, and cultural amenities within a short walk or cycle from their homes. The project positions itself as an ecological and social laboratory, interlinking urban systems to enable sustainable living, working, and social interaction while reducing reliance on private vehicles and lowering overall carbon impact.

Delivered through a collaboration of leading local and international experts in architecture, engineering, sustainability, and urban planning, the project reflects a strong commitment to inclusive development and long-term resilience. Tygerdal Green City sets a benchmark for integrated, low-carbon urban regeneration in South Africa, demonstrating how innovative design and strategic partnerships can unlock both social value and economic opportunity at scale.
